Jalapeño Cheddar Scones -- savoury buttermilk scones filled with flavourful cheddar cheese and jalapeños. These scones would be delicious served with a bowl of soup!
What could be cozier than a bowl of hearty soup on a chilly day? A bowl of soup with a buttery homemade scone, duh! These are the perfect "soup scones". The savoury flavours of cheddar cheese and fresh jalapeños are so tasty in these buttery scones.
Worried about the jalapeños being too spicy for you? You can totally cut the measurement of jalapeños in half if you'd like. But I wouldn't worry, the amount of peppers used is not substantial and jalapeño peppers aren't typically very spicy and you will remove the seed for this recipe. I think you will love these scones even if you aren't a fan of spicy food. It's more of the jalapeño flavour we're going for in this recipe, not the heat.
That being said, I recommend wearing (food-safe) gloves when you clean and cut up the fresh jalapeños. Trust me, I've done it without and my fingers felt pretty tingly for a few hours after!

📖 Recipe
Jalapeño Cheddar Scones
Equipment
- baking sheet
- parchment paper
- mixing bowls
- measuring cups & spoons
- pastry cutter
- whisk
- silicone spatula
Ingredients
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons granulated white sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup cold salted butter, cubed
- ¼ cup finely chopped fresh jalapeños (remove seeds)*
- 1 ¼ cups shredded cheddar cheese (I use medium cheddar)
- ½ cup buttermilk
- 1 egg
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400℉. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together in a large bowl. Cut the cold cubed butter into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter until the pieces of butter are the size of peas. Fold in the chopped jalapeños and shredded cheese.
- In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg. Add to the flour/butter mixture and gently fold with a spatula until the dough just starts to come together. Turn the contents of the bowl onto the countertop and knead/press the mixture just until the dough comes together.
- Shape the dough into 3 even rounds each about 1 inch thick. Cut each round into 4 even wedges using a pizza cutter or large knife and arrange them on the prepared baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 17-20 minutes or until lightly golden. Let cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

This recipe is fantastic! I didn’t have any salted butter, and I read previous reviews of people wanting a little more flavor… So I decided to add 3tsp of garlic salt! YUM! Thank you for the recipe!

I make these all the time. I follow the recipe and they come out delicious every time! I’ve tried other scone recipes but keep coming back to this one. Thank you for sharing!

Made this today during lunch time on a full work day - they are so easy and straightforward to make in one bowl! Super soft and scrumptious, and absolutely delicious. I made about 18 with a 3-inch biscuit cutter and they were all gone at the tea party I went to. It was great to have something savory on the table.

I’m new to baking, and decided to try this out, but had to make some adjustments based on what I had available. Don’t have a pastry cutter, had to cut the buttermilk in with a fork. I think it worked ok. Additionally I used heavy cream instead of butter milk, and unsalted butter. I added a smidge more salt for that reason. With that being said… I liked the outcome. They we’re quite as flaky as the photos here, maybe even a bit undercooked, but they taste great and I’m happy with my first scone.

Cut the butter, not buttermilk lol

I wish they had more flavor. Tasted very little anything. Tasted like flavorless bread. I may substitute pickled jalepenos and sharp cheddar next time instead. Any tips?
Naomi Andres
Hi Ashley,
I’m so sorry to hear that you weren’t happy with this recipe. Did you make sure to use salted butter and also add the salt to the recipe? Salt plays a big role in bringing out flavours, especially in dough. Using pickled jalapeños and sharp cheddar sounds like a great idea, let me know if you try it!
Thanks,
Naomi

I loved this recipe! I only had pickled jalapeños on hand and used a mix of leftover Gouda, Gruyere and Parmesan instead of the cheddar, but the dough was layered and flaky and perfect. 😍 Thank you!

Thank you so much for the great review, Emma, that sounds incredible!

These were 🔥💯 amazing. Like other commenters, I did add more buttermilk (probably 3/4 to 1c total). Otherwise, delicious!!! A total brunch hit.

Turned our amazing!!! I had to add a bit more buttermilk to get the consistency I wanted but such a huge hit. I used the recipe to make a Rosemary Havarti version too which also turned out great.

My husband and I loved these, not super spicy. Did not have cheddar and subbed co-jack, still came out flaky and moist. Will make these again!

Awesome!! Thank you for the kind review, Kim!

Made these for my friends and they all asked for the recipe. So good and so easy. There's a moment of "oh shoot, I don't think it'll come together." I promise it does. 11/10 recipe.
