⭐️ Why You Need to Make This Recipe
- Rich and decadent. Three different chocolate components; cocoa in the scone dough, chocolate chips, and chocolate icing on top make these chocolate fudge scones irresistible.
- Made in under 30 minutes. That's right, you can whip up a batch of these scones in under half an hour! Perfect for a last-minute coffee time.
- Soft and buttery. These scones taste like a buttery pastry form of chocolate cake!
🧈 Ingredients
Here are the ingredients needed to make these double chocolate chip scones.
- Butter - Make sure the butter is cold from the refrigerator. Cut it into small cubes to make it easier to cut into the flour mixture with a pastry cutter.
- Cocoa Powder - I recommended using a Dutch-processed cocoa powder for a smooth chocolate flavour in the scone dough and the icing.
- Chocolate - I use semisweet chocolate chips to mix into the dough. You could use chopped semisweet chocolate, chocolate chunks, milk chocolate, or white chocolate. I also add white chocolate chips to my Triple Chocolate Fudge Cookie recipe!
- Chocolate Icing - Make a chocolate drizzle for on top of the scones with powdered sugar, melted butter, cocoa powder, milk, and vanilla extract.
See the recipe card for the full ingredient list and measurements.
📝 Substitutions
Here are some possible variations and substitutions to help you make this recipe without another trip to the grocery store!
- Salted Butter - You may use unsalted butter instead. Just add ½ teaspoon of salt to the dry ingredients for proper flavour development.
- Chocolate Chips - They won't be triple chocolate scones anymore, but you may omit the chocolate chips to make double chocolate scones! Try replacing them with nuts instead.
📃 Instructions
Step 1: Whisk together the flour, cocoa, sugar, and baking powder. Add the cold cubes of butter.
Step 2: Work the cold butter in using a pastry cutter until the pieces are the size of small peas.
Step 3: Stir in the chocolate chips.
Step 4: Whisk together the heavy cream, egg, and vanilla in a separate bowl.
Step 5: Pour the cream and egg mixture into the other bowl.
Step 6: Mix just until a shaggy dough forms. Turn onto a lightly floured countertop and gently press and knead together into a dough. Be careful not to overwork!
Step 7: Divide the dough into 3 equal pieces. Form into disks around 1 inch thick and 3 inches in diameter.
Step 8: Slice each disk into 4 equal wedges.
Bake the scones for 15-17 minutes on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving at least 1 inch of room between each scone for them to spread and grow.
Whisk together the melted butter, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth to make the icing and drizzle on top of the scones after they have cooled down for at least 15 minutes.
💡 Top Tip
Do not overwork the dough! Scone dough is extremely delicate and when working with it you must be careful not to overmix it or knead too much. Gently coax the dough together in a delicate kneading motion, pressing the dough together. Overworking the dough will cause the gluten to develop and melt the pieces of butter into the dough, making the scones tough and chewy instead of soft and flakey.
❓ Recipe FAQs
In a pinch, you may use milk instead of heavy cream to make scones. I don't recommend it as it will result in a dough that is more wet and may cause the scones to spread more. The finished scone will also be less rich due to the lower fat content of milk.
Use COLD butter for a flakey scone. Use high quality ingredients. Do not overmix the dough!
Scones are best fresh out of the oven or baked only a few hours before serving. You may prepare the dough ahead of time, refrigerate it, then bake the scones right before serving.
For a rich and flavourful scone, you must use butter. I have never tested scones with margarine and do not recommend it.
Most scones will be done when lightly golden brown on the exterior. If you're not sure, insert a toothpick into the center. If the toothpick comes out clean, the scones are done.

Ingredients
- 1 ⅔ cups all-purpose flour

- ½ cup white sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- ¾ cup cold salted butter * cubed
- ¾ cup semisweet chocolate chips *
- ½ cup heavy cream
- 1 whole egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Icing:
- 1 tablespoon salted butter melted
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder sifted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 cup powdered sugar
Instructions
To make the Scones:
- Preheat the oven to 400℉. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

- Shape the dough into 3 rounds each about 1 inch thick. Cut each round into 4 wedges using a pizza cutter or large knife and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-17 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the scones cool on the baking sheet before topping with the icing.
To make the Icing;
- In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, sifted cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and milk. Add the powdered sugar gradually and whisk until smooth. Drizzle over the cooled scones using a spoon, a ziplock bag with the corner snipped, or a piping bag. Enjoy!
Notes
- You may use unsalted butter instead. Just add ½ teaspoon of salt to the dry ingredients.
- You may use chopped semisweet chocolate, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or white chocolate instead.
